These images - sections of walls, old boats and inspiring textural surfaces – shot in the many places I have visited the years were captured using a Nikon F55 SLR camera and latter an Olympus E420 DSLR-

The images were taken flat on and close up with very little cropping. I wanted to create abstractions within the viewfinder of my camera. The framed images are subjects to which we would not normally pay much attention - the layering of torn and distressed messages, the dramatic surfaces affected by weather and the passing of time. I was interested in how little we need to see of a word to be able to read the message, the fact that walls divide spaces geographically and historically, the contrasting shapes, colours and texture thrown together by chance.
